Satie's 'Gymnopedies,' published in 1888 were three piano compositions, each written in 3/4 time and sharing a common theme and structure. Collectively, the 'Gymnopedies' are seen as the precursors to modern ambient music - gentle, yet somewhat eccentric pieces which, when composed, defied the classical tradition. Gymnopedie No. 1 is perhaps the most well-known of the three, and the dreamy, ambient nature of the music lends itself very well to romantic and contemplative scenes. It has been used in many TV shows and films, including: Man On Wire, The Royal Tenenbaums, What Lies Beneath and The X Files. This performance uses a perfectly sampled Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, with subtle hall reverb for ambience.
