4 Public Domain Gregorian Chants for Download

g_chantHere are four public domain Gregorian Chant music clips for you to download and use in absolutely whatever way you want. Public domain means no one owns it, it means you can just use it with no restrictions. These are pretty good quality clips too.

Gregorian chant is the central tradition of Western plainchant, a form of monophonic liturgical chant in Western Christianity that accompanied the celebration of Mass and other ritual services. This vast repertory of chants is the oldest music known as it is the first repertory to have been adequately notated in the 10th century.

  • michael drumm

I am interested in the Gregorian chants for an scene in an indie film I am producing…are they available as wav. files? and is there a license agreement beyond “they are free to use”? thanks

  • http://www.partnersinrhyme.com admin

Sorry, we don’t have the original WAV files but it is very easy to convert them to that format if that’s what you need. Try iTunes for your conversions.

Since the files are in public domain we cannot grant a license to use them as we do not own them.

    Dear Friends

Thank you for your fabulous site. I am developing meditation CDs. I need to be careful about copyright. The four Gregorain Chant tracks are very beautiful. Is there any way I can at least acknowledge the singers or their source?

    Many thanks.

  • Dan George

    Hi Mark,
I am putting together a CD of meditative sounds that will ultimately be sold with the intent of generating revenue. It would be a privilege to include the Gregorian Chants in this collection. As copyright/public domain laws are vast and deep, and I do not want to violate any of these laws, can you offer written assurance that these chants are free and clear to use for such purpose. Thank you.

    dan

  • http://www.partnersinrhyme.com admin

We of course cannot give you written assurance for music we do not own but these tracks were listed under this Creative Commons Public Domain Certification
    http://creativecommons.org/licenses/publicdomain/

We take no other responsibility for these tracks and are not liable in any way for any type of use for these tracks.
You use them at your own risk but they are indeed listed as public domain on archive.org.

Gregorian Chant is truly great. an icon. a legend. snd i want to sing and perform with them one of this days..
Our church is needing support for renovation and rehabilitation and i hope there are people who would love to support financially so i can make a way to invite gregorian chant here in my country so we can produce a concert to help in raising funds for the church and the victims of the calamity that struck this part of the globe.
As for my part, to raise funds for the gregorian chants group airfair back and forth. i believe our cardinal, bishop and monsignor will love to ask them to stay at the bishop's home and my people shall feed them abuntdantly in their stay.. they might even want that i produce a sequel of the concert at the Boracay Beach where a lot of tourists make visits.
And as a singer/songwriter…i would love to sing with them songs like the “careless whisper, bridge over troubled water, i believe, our father, you'll never walk alone and give them copies of some of my original songs which they might want to record. Do you want to finace the album and be its executive producer… why not.. c'mon! let's do it.. i would love to ask Steven Jacob, Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones with Oprah to fund this and be a part of the songs for the end days. a history in the making huh.. hmm… i wanted to become a legend myself for my kids and theirs.

When I right click on them, it just takes me to windows media player & does not create an MP3 in my computer. I'm very confused & any help would be appreciated!

it is interesting that you have the name of one of the great patriarts of the Bible. In Genesis we read that Abraham was asked by God to build an alter and make a blood sacrifice. i say all of this to say that music or anything else does not bring us closer to God. It is by the atoning blood only of the Lord Jesus Christ that reconciles a fallen world to God. Any other experiences are false and is only a feel good to the flesh. However,
I have to say that these chants are lovely. I listen to them myself from time to time. Please remember Isaac that to obey the Word of God is better than sacrifice which is found in 1 Samuel I believe.

  • axgrindr

Don't save the files to a program. Save them to your hard drive. There should be some kind of option on a PC to simply save a file to your hard disk instead of directly to a piece of software.
I use a Mac so I can't give you specific instructions on how to save a file to your hard drive. Maybe a PC user reading this can answer her question for her?

  • Cory

Sorry to be a music history snob guys, but only track 2 is a Gregorian Chant. The other 3 are late-Medieval (and possibly early-Renaissance) polyphony. Gregorian chant is one melody sung (usually) in unison. Polyphony is multiple melodic voices singing in harmony. From what I heard the polyphony used liturgical texts, however, and was probably still used for services.

this gregorian music site helped me to develop the interest on Gregorian chants a lot!!!!! Once u listen to it, u may enter to the bliss of music!

Thank you for this. I like the brief write-up as well. This music will be helpful to me as I further study the origins of Flamenco music in Spain — a complex and rather undocumented melding of music and rhythm from the Romaní, Arab traditions and Gregorian chant/Latin/Catholic church influence.

    ARE THESE REALLY PUBLIC DOMAIN

I used two of these tracks as part of a video project I have up on youtube last September, everything was fine with that. Today I used track no. 3 with another video project, to be told I am breaching copyright, that this track is owned by some copyright company, I didn’t write down their name before it disappeared off the screen. WHAT IS GOING ON, IS THIS PUBLIC DOMAIN OR IS IT NOT?

    KIND REGARDS JOHNNIE LAWSON

  • Mark

    Hi Johnnie-
Yes, they are public domain. Which of course means that anyone can register them in the youtube contentID system and (falsely) claim them as their own.
Just one of the pitfalls of using free stuff in your projects I guess.
No reason to get all up in arms about it. You act as if you paid for a license or something. Free stuff doesn’t come with guarantees.

  • Iwavemusic

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting these chants.  Would you clarify what you mean here about no guarantees.  I would consider using these chants for a project but do need to know who “owns” them or what proof is available should I be approached and accused of breach.

    Thanks

    Lisa

  • Iwavemusic

    Johnnie,

Did you resolve the issue?  Would you contact me and let me know who actually is claiming ownership and accusing you of breach of ownership so I don’t end up with the same problem should I use these chants in a project.

    Thanks,

    Lisa

  • http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/ Partners In Rhyme

Public domain means that nobody owns this music.
I am sorry but we cannot provide “proof”.
    Good luck with your project.
    -Mark

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/johnnielawson Johnnie lawson

    Hi Lisa
A year and a half I used these chants with a video I have on youtube believing them to be in the public domain. Some months later I uploaded another video using the same music only this time I very quickly received a message from youtube stating that they weren’t in the pd and that WMG own the rights to these, so I took that video down immediately.

My older video was also slapped with a breach of copyright claim, I disputed their claim but I have not been successful, WMG are the ones that are receiving the revenue from my video.

I informed the people who own this website, those who are claiming these chants to be in the public domain, as you can see from from their reply to my query they don’t understand the concept of something being placed in the public domain and they weren’t helpful at all in resolving the issue, unlike the people at musopen.com who, once a similar situation occurred, immediately got on to it and sorted the problem out even to the point of having a solicitor contact youtube.

My own feeling is that these chants are not now in the public domain but the people who own this site are continuing to advertise them as such because it keeps them first in a google search.

Lisa please keep me informed as to how you get on, as I have left my older video up in the hope that some day this may be resolved. If you are interested the video in question can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IW5oi7HkRrQ

Best of luck Lisa with your project.

    Kind regards Johnnie Lawson

  • http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/ Partners In Rhyme

    Hi Johnnie-
We certainly do know the meaning of public domain.
These specific tracks were pulled from the internet archive website where they are officially listed as public domain tracks along with many others.
    http://www.archive.org/details/GregorianChantMass
If that is not enough proof for you then you should not be using the music.
These tracks are obviously being falsely tagged in the Youtube ContentID system by WMG who are unaware of the public domain status of these specific performances of the music.
The Youtube ContentID also has trouble telling the difference between different version of identically performed classical music.
Again, this is something that is being offered to for free. You need to take it easy.

    -Mark

  • andrewz

I’ve had videos on Youtube with music that I was absolutely sure that I had rights to, and received copyright breach notices, I’m pretty sure they were some kind of spam. If the message disappeared then you probably don’t have anything to worry about.
